Rural County Review

About

Rural County Review is an editorial publication about county geography and regional identity. We follow the traces left by landforms, boundaries, place names, settlements and routes, with room for the small details that make a map feel connected to the ground.

What we cover

Our subjects include the shape of valleys and ridges, the histories suggested by place names, the patterns of rural settlement and the ways paths and roads link places. We look at how counties are understood without treating any boundary as the whole story.

Who it is for

The publication is for curious readers who want to notice more in the places they know or pass through. No specialist background is needed; we explain terms and keep the focus on details readers can observe for themselves.

How we look

We use a field-notebook approach: precise questions, grounded explanations and careful distinctions between what a feature shows and what it might suggest. A place name is not proof of a complete history, and a map cannot capture every lived connection.
